Recycling paid off for pensioner A PENSIONER has reaped a financial reward after she did the right thing and recycled her old telephone directory.
Maureen Robinson, of Distons Lane in Chipping Norton, won £50 in West Oxfordshire District Council's summer prize draw after she took her Yellow Pages to one of the recycling banks.
The 82-year-old had made a special effort to get it to the bank in New Street car park, by using her shopping trolley to lug the heavy directory up the hill.
She said: "I wouldn't want to just throw away my old directory when it can be reused. It was a lovely surprise to receive £50 in the post."
All the old directories collected by the council are recycled into newspapers and magazines.
District councillor David Harvey said: "This year's Yellow Pages recycling scheme has been a huge success with 14.34 tonnes of old Yellow Pages directories being diverted from landfill, almost double what we collected a year ago."
