THE first free Banbury and District Show has been hailed a massive success.

Organisers Banbury Town Council said Sunday’s event in Spiceball Park attracted about 10,000, double its usual gate.

Last year’s show – organised by Rotary Club and Round Table leaders – was hit by rain and there were concerns it might not have gone ahead this year.

The council took over main responsibility for the running of the event – with support from the fundraising groups – and scrapped entry fees.

Thousands enjoyed attractions including battlefield re-enactments, dog shows, circus skill workshops, quad biking and falconry displays.

Council leader Kieron Mallon said: “A tremendous amount of planning went into the event, and we are delighted that a change in the weather meant that all the hard work was worthwhile.

“I spoke to many people on the day and everyone agreed that it was a great success.

“Following the Diamond Jubilee celebrations last Sunday and Monday, the Banbury and District Show has provided local people with two fabulous weekends of entertainment — free of charge.”

Victoria Kirkwood visited with her family, including children Violet, six, and Kyle, four.

The Banbury resident said: “We had an absolutely fantastic time.

“Violet was over the moon meeting the Saxon warriors, but Kyle was a bit more shy.

“It was a really nice family fun day, really laid back, and we thought the number of people was fantastic.”

The event was supported by Banbury Rotary Club, Banbury Cherwell Rotary Club, and the Banbury Cross Round Table.
