AN elderly couple whose Banbury house was targeted by burglars have warned other residents to be on their guard.

Tom and Frances Steatham, who live in the Broughton Road area of Banbury, said they were going to install a burglar alarm after the attempted day-time break-in on September 14.

Mr Steatham, 90, said: "We were lucky. They were almost in, but something must have disturbed them.

"We had gone out for lunch with our daughter and returned home to find the garden gate lock had been broken - but at the time, we didn't realise it had been burglars.

"It wasn't until it rained later, and water came in through a rear door, that we discovered that someone had tried to force it open. Looking around further, we found marks on some windows where they had tried to get in."

He said: "I advise everyone to look at their security. It happened to use and it could happen to anyone. It has shaken us a little bit, but we have to carry on - though we will take extra precautions in future."

Mrs Steatham, 93, added: "We have lived here for 36 years and have always felt safe, but we do not feel so safe now."

Police have joined Mr Steatham in warning householders to be security conscious after two successful burglaries in Bodicote Two houses, in Park End and Molyneux Drive, were broken into between September 12 and 16.

Intruders forced open doors and windows at both properties but left without stealing anything.

Crime reduction advisor Jane Taylor said: "I urge residents to remain vigilant, keep their eyes open, and make a note of any unusual cars or people.

"Write down the time, date, location, and their description. If a crime is committed you will then have vital information that could assist a police investigation.

"However if you feel they are acting suspiciously, don't hesitate to call the police.

"Anyone who wants advice on home security should contact me. They can telephone 08458 505505 and ask for the crime reduction office at Banbury or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
