A BANBURY supermarket’s revamp has led to 50 new jobs being created.
Sainsbury’s, Oxford Road, Banbury, has been extended by more than third to 70,000sq ft from 44,000 sq ft. The store is due to be re-opened today by local resident Anna Stowe, who turns 70 today.
The mother-of-seven said: “I was shocked to be given the honour of opening the supermarket – I’m just an ordinary mum. It’s a wonderful way to mark my birthday and a cause for celebration for the town.”
Building work started last September and changes to the shop, which employs 350 people, include a large homeware and clothing section, bigger cafe, new pizza counter and expanded bakery.
Store manager Steve Martin said: “We hope our customers enjoy the new-look store and look forward to getting feedback from them as well as hearing their ideas on how we can work with them to make a positive difference in the area.
“Thanks to all our customers and residents for bearing with us over the last 31 weeks as we worked at making this store better than ever.
“We’re delighted to be able to welcome residents and visitors to Banbury who will enjoy a bigger and better shopping experience.”
So far this year the store has raised £8,000 for Dogs for the Disabled, its charity of the year.
