Emergency services are at the scene of a crash between a car and a tanker which has closed the M40 southbound in north Oxfordshire.
The collision happened on the M40 southbound between junctions 10 and 9, about three-quarters of a mile before junction 9.
The M40 was closed at junction 10 while collision investigators examined the scene.
There are extensive tailbacks and motorists are being advised to avoid the area for the foreseeable future. Reports say queues stretching back seven miles have built up.
Emergency services said they expected to re-open two lanes by 1pm, but motorists have been warned to expect delays in the area.
A Land Rover Discovery and a tanker were involved in the collision.
The driver of the Land Rover, a man, had to be cut free from his vehicle and is now in the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford with head injuries. His condition is described as serious, but not life threatening.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Sgt Bill Sykes at Abingdon police station via 0845 8 505 505, or if you don’t want to talk to the police or give your name, call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
