A COUPLE who launched a £10,000 appeal in memory of their daughter are celebrating after smashing their target.

Karen and Neil Hancox were left devastated after their daughter Kayleigh was stillborn in November, 2007.

In tribute to her they set up the Angel Gifts Appeal to raise money to build a public children's memorial in the Snowdrop Garden, Hardwick Hill Crematorium, where Kayleigh's ashes are buried, and monitoring equipment for the Horton's maternity unit. Three months ago the appeal was kicked off when Mrs Hancox took part in a flamenco dance show in Leamington Spa. Since then the couple, of Romney Way, Banbury, have been overwhelmed by the support they have received.

Last Sunday, aug 31 a fun day and raffle at the Easington Pub helped boost the appeal by a staggering £7,000. Staff at the pub, in Bloxham Road, donned tutus and painted their faces and firefighters from Green Watch dropped by to hand over a £1,250 cheque.

Mrs Hancox, 30, said: "Kayleigh has changed our lives forever, her story has touched so many people's hearts and the warmth and support we have received has been wonderful.

"Kayleigh never had the chance to live in this world, but her life was not in vain, as she has helped others and made a difference."

A bouncy castle, face painting, beat the goalie, a barbecue and tombola ensured a fun filled day and the grand raffle draw kept everyone on the edge their seats.

Bloxham School teacher Mrs Hancox said: "The day was a great success, despite the weather, with a real community atmosphere, which was fantastic.

"The highlight of the event — apart from the dressed up bar staff in their tutus and painted faces — was the presentation of a cheque from Banbury Fire Station, for £1,250. The arrival of the fire engine and Green Watch crew caused quite a stir amongst everyone.

"Within just three months, fundraising efforts have now exceeded all expectations, and we have smashed the initial £10,000 target. However, it is not only about the money. The support and comfort we have received has meant so very much to us, and made it all worthwhile.

"The Angel Gifts Appeal, including the raffle and funday, has been a positive focus and a huge source of comfort, when we miss Kayleigh so very much.

"The appeal has been such hard work and so time consuming, but it has all been so worthwhile."

The couple still have a few more events planned to top up the fund, including an auction and car boot sale.

Mrs Hancox had a text-book pregnancy but shortly after her waters broke last November, doctors told her they could not find a heartbeat, and that daughter Kayleigh had died in the womb. The couple were left devastated.

Through their grief Mr and Mrs Hancox have thrown themselves behind the Angel Gifts Appeal, covering all expenses themselves so that all the money raised will go to the fund.
