JORDANNE Whiley could not follow her Paralympics success with another US Open title.
The Steventon-based player competed in New York only a week after claiming doubles silver and singles bronze at the Paralympics in Tokyo – her best results in both wheelchair events at the Games.
Whiley arrived at the final Grand Slam of the year on a high, but she lost 6-1, 6-3 to doubles partner Yui Kamiji in the singles semi-finals.
The pair teamed up to reach the doubles final, only to go down 6-1, 6-2 to Dutch top seeds Diede de Groot and Aniek van Koot.
Whiley admitted she struggled to maintain the momentum built up in Japan, where she achieved her long-term ambition of a Paralympics singles medal.
The 29-year-old said: “It’s been a really emotional and physical last couple of weeks.
“Emotionally, after such a successful Tokyo, I think I’ve just really struggled to find my tennis this week.
“Obviously, the Dutch were really strong, so credit to them.”
She added: “I had such a successful Tokyo and I’m so happy and proud with what I did there.
“I’m just disappointed (now), but I’m going home and I just want to go and see (son) Jackson and spend some time with him.”
Whiley has 12 Grand Slam doubles titles with Kamiji and won the singles at the 2015 US Open.
