TWO goals in two minutes earned Oxford United victory in front of a record crowd at North Leigh’s Eynsham Park.
Matty Taylor fired home a penalty against his former club with 17 minutes left, before Marcus Browne completed the scoring moments later.
The Millers frustrated the U’s until that point and Roger James squeezed an equaliser under Jack Stevens early in the second period, after Marcus McGuane rolled in a first-half opener.
It was a good workout for United in front of more than 500 fans at Eynsham Park, with the other half of the squad facing Banbury United in the next part of their double-header at 4pm.
Karl Robinson's starting XI was broadly the same line-up that took to the pitch for the second half at Oxford City, with Yoav Sade in for Anthony Forde in the only change.
The hosts were full of energy from the start and the U’s looked to move them around in the early afternoon heat, although a few attacks broke down through wayward passes over the top.
North Leigh had the first shot on target, though, with James firing low at Jack Stevens from a tight angle after 16 minutes.
Billy Bodin almost put the U’s ahead moments later when a clearance ricocheted off him towards goal but it flew straight into Adam North’s gloves.
North Leigh were tough to break down and useful on the ball, with former United trainee Aaron McCreadie instrumental in a flowing move that ended with Levi Steele heading over.
The visitors went up a gear just before the half-hour mark and took the lead. McGuane exchanged passes with Bodin and Taylor as he drove forward, before rolling the ball into the bottom corner.
The U’s began to look more dangerous and Taylor could have extended the advantage, the striker seeing a low effort touched wide before firing over from the resulting corner.
Levi Steele was forced off through injury late in the half, Lance Williams replacing him, before Stevens blocked James’ powerful effort from an angle.
The North Leigh forward continued to look dangerous and grabbed a deserved equaliser within two minutes of the restart. James raced towards the byline and fired low towards goal, with Stevens getting a hand to the ball but only diverting it into the net.
McGuane went down holding his knee moments later and United took no chances as second-year scholar Enrique Tiamuna came on.
The Millers made several changes in forward positions at the break and they continued to match the U’s as the hour came and went.
Browne saw very little of the ball in the opening 70 minutes but came alive midway through the second half, hurdling a challenge to race into space down the left. The forward went on his own and saw his deflected effort skied over the crossbar by Gunn.
United were growing frustrated, only to score twice in a flash.
North Leigh shot themselves in the foot for United’s second as North passed straight to Taylor. The No 9 raced into the penalty area instead of going for goal and drew a foul from Michael Hopkins.
Taylor was in familiar territory as he stepped up in front of the clubhouse and sent North the wrong way from the spot.
The U’s had a third moments later as Browne drifted inside to take Bodin’s pass in the box, before firing low into the net – with the ball thudding into the hoardings.
United made ten changes in the closing stages as all the first-team players came off, with the youngsters seeing out victory.
