GARY Sweeney and Bradley Townsend enjoyed a successful night in Swindon as both fighters came away with victories.
The Oxfordshire duo featured on Neilson Boxing’s latest Fight Town show in Wiltshire, with their respective bouts going the distance.
Witney’s Townsend, who also goes by the alias ‘The Talisman’, was the first to step through the ropes when he took on Lee Hallett in only his second bout since returning from injury.
The contest was fought over six rounds and the west Oxfordshire resident demonstrated good speed and technical ability while navigating his way to a first win at his new weight class.
The result means Townsend now has a record of 10-0 and the unbeaten prospect felt good in the ring.
“This fight was my first one at my new weight, super-lightweight, so it was a bit different for me because for the last ten years I have been a welterweight,” he said.
“Coming down in weight was something new to me but considering that I made the weight pretty good.
“I felt really good (in the ring), I felt strong and fit so that will definitely be the weight I’ll be boxing at going forward because I feel like that will give me the best opportunities.
“Overall, I was happy with the performance and so was my coach Rob (Lloyd-Taylor) – as long as he is happy that’s the main thing.”
Sweeney headlined the show in Swindon as he contested his first fight in more than five years following a plethora of injuries in recent times.
The Bicester-based heavyweight showed no signs of rustiness, making a fast start to his four-round contest and looking busy throughout as he overcame a sturdy Pawel Strykowski on his way to winning on points.
The Irishman was thrilled with his display in Wiltshire and is looking forward to his next contest.
“It felt good to be back in the ring and to get the ring rust off,” Sweeney said.
“It was a tough four rounds, but I got the rounds in and that is what I needed so now I’m ready to move onto my next fight.
“I’m looking forward to my next one, I’m hoping to be fighting again by August to get the ball rolling again.”
Sweeney extended his record to 5-0 with his victory over Strykowski, more than 1,600 days after winning his fourth professional fight.
