BOLTON Wanderers will start next season in Sky Bet League One on -12 points after appointing administrators.

The club will be in the same division as Oxford United next season following relegation.

They would have started as one of the promotion contenders, as they were in 2016/17 when they bounced back to the Championship at the first attempt by finishing second.

But the financially-troubled Wanderers have today confirmed Paul Appleton and Asher Miller of insolvency firm David Rubin and Partners as joint administrators.

In doing so they become the first EFL club in six years to go into administration, which carries a 12-point penalty.

While in theory it is discretionary, the EFL have confirmed it will be applied.

And Wanderers could start the season with even more ground to make up, with an extra punishment in the pipeline following their failure to fulfil the fixture with Brentford last month.

It has been suggested that could see an extra eight points deducted.
