Stuart Fleetwood's double gave Hereford United the points against the U's on Military Day at the Kassam Stadium.
Fleetwood scored on eight minutes, and two minutes into stoppage time at the end.
In between, Oxford dominated, but couldn't put the ball in the net.
Joe Colbeck delivered a great left-wing cross from near the touchline, and Fleetwood darted in, in front of Ryan Clarke, to divert the ball in with a fine finish for his 12th goal of the season to put the visitors ahead early on.
United, who were unchanged following their win at Morecambe, responded well to the early setback.
They continued to pass and move, with some intricate moves, and were unfortunate not to be back on level terms by the break.
James Constable planted a header over from Harry Worley’s cross, and Anthony Tonkin’s free-kick forced keeper Adam Bartlett into a save high to his left.
That free-kick came after Simon Heslop had his legs taken away from him as he tried to shoot on the edge of the area.
And it looked a similar scenario when Tom Craddock appeared to have his legs whipped away by Michael Townsend as he ran into the area, centrally, with only Bartlett to beat.
United appealed vociferously for a penalty but the ref simply waved play on.
Asa Hall was involved in a lot of the home team’s play, and the midfielder, having scored twice the previous Saturday, went close a couple of times.
When Constable cut the ball back for him, he was just unable to reach it ten yards out.
It was from Hall’s pass that Craddock broke free on the left for a drilled shot that Bartlett beat out at his near post.
It wasn’t all Oxford, though. And when Clarke and one of his defenders got into a misunderstanding, leaving the keeper stranded 30 yards from his line, Colbeck tried to chip over him from the left touchline 40 yards out, and Clarke had to race back to catch the lob close to his goal.
In the second half, it was all Oxford as they laid siege to Hereford’s goal.
After Anthony Tonkin and Heslop saw their shots blocked in front of goal, Harry Worley sliced his shot over the bar from close in.
Alfie Potter and Simon Hackney came on with 20 minutes to go.
And Hackney almost grabbed the equaliser with ten minutes to go when he headed against the underside of the bar, running in from deep to meet Heslop’s cross.
When Constable powerfully headed wide moments later, it really did seem as though it wasn’t to be Oxford United’s day.
And in stoppage time, after Clarke had saved from Harry Pell on a Hereford break, Fleetwood turned in his striking partner's driven cross to make it 2-0.
