Andy Gibbons scored a hat-trick as Brightwell delivered a stunning first-round knock-out of holders Oxford Yellows with a 3-2 win in the Devenney Cup on Sunday, writes Tim Siret.

All the goals came in the first half as Gibbons raced the Division 1 side ahead into a 3-0 lead, with useful assists coming from David Smith, Neil Carrington Ben Cordery and Phil Madley.

Andy McMahon scored twice for Yellows to make it 3-2 at half-time, but they were denied an equaliser by stand-in keeper Adam Strudwick after the break.

Only one other tie went the way of underdogs, new side Hagbourne Hotspur edging past Division 2 outfit Sutton Wanderers 3-2 after extra time.

Mike James and Chris Stri-nger netted for Sutton, but a brace from John Ramsay and a strike from Joseph Thorne put the Division 3B outfit into the second round.

Ramsay’s second in extra time proved to be the winner.

Kings Arms Wheatley won the battle of the big guns 4-2 away to Barton United.

The visitors’ scorers were Luke Cuff, Darren Smith, Francis Mapplethorpe and Jay Hill, while keeper Steve Skyrme saved a penalty. Aaron Barrett hit both Barton goals.

Dorchester United were no match for rivals AFC Hinksey, crashing 11-0.

There were hat-tricks from Jamie McCuaig, Kieron Davis and Alex Fasoranti, while Julian McCalmon and Denel Thomas completed the rout.

Rover Cowley were also on fire as the Premier outfit whacked a weakened Yellow Eagles 12-0, thanks to Carl Bloomfield’s hat-trick, Craig Bloomfield (2), Tom Heyday (2), Ryan Macer, Aaron Andrews, Craig Pratley, Craig Hambridge and Ben Armstrong.

Chef Pat Clark served up seven – five in the first half –as White Horse Abingdon won 8-0 at home to Chatsworth Buccaneers, Tom Shepherd grabbing the other.

A hat-trick from Henry Alkali could not stop Oxford FC losing 6-4 after extra time to Mansfield Road.

Andrew Pantry scored the other goal for Oxford, who had Fama Mara sent off.

Mansfield’s Tim Wright, Max Burton, Francis O’Neill and John Sutton made it 4-4, before strikes from Rob Reid and Rob Cornish won it in extra time.

AFC Jericho cruised past Freeland Yeoman 4-0.

Jack Hayhurst scored once and made other goals for Mar-ley Joseph and Sam Crothers, before Kamen Matthews sco-red direct from a corner.

The only blemish for Jericho was Alex DeSilva being dismissed for foul and abusive language.

A cracking tie at Northway saw the home side win squeeze home against Iffley Harriers 5-4 in extra time.

For Northway, Liam Hatt hit a treble and veteran defender Carl Hibbins smashed home two penalties.

Jack Allen replied for Harriers with a double, alongside Leon Carter and Jack Bennett.
