OXFORD Yellows stormed out of the blocks in the League Cup final – and secured a 2-0 victory over Barton United to lift the trophy, writes GEOFF BOWER.
It took them just five minutes to break the deadlock, Sean Flaherty latching onto a loose ball to scramble home the opener.
A great move involving Johnny McMahon and Kyle McCoy ended with captain Rocky Whiting just beating the advancing keeper to fire home to make it 2-0 midway through the half.
Barton rallied and put Yellows under intense pressure after the break, but as chances came and went at both ends, man-of-the-match Ryan Davies kept them at bay in the Yellows goal with a string of fine saves.
The icing on the cake came when Barton were awarded a dubious late penalty, but Davies saved well from Ryan Curtin.
In the Premier Division, Mansfield Road and Chalgrove drew 1-1.
Nick Postlecurry netting for Mansfield, Adam Cowling replying for Chalgrove.
Riverside powered to a 5-1 victory at AFC Boudika in Division 1.
Lenny Sackey and Ryan Lauder grabbed braces for the visitors, with Lance Williams also on target. Paul Stedman hit Boudika’s consolation. In the Supplementary Cup, Highfield were always in control at home to Yellow Eagles, running out 7-2 winners.
Ben Foster grabbed a hat-trick for Highfield, Keiran Chambers a brace, with Dean Thompson and Ryan Dudley scoring the others.
Goals from Thom Airs and George Dugdale proved in vain for the visitors.
