Ryan Prosser gave Merthyr the lead when he side-footed home from five yards Just before half-time, Abingdon equalised when Stuart Young skinned his marked and crossed for Sam Tucker to hammer a shot into the bottom corner of the goal.
After United’s Yashwa Romeo had been denied by a save, Merthyr regained control in the seconds half with two goals from Marcus Griffiths.
Abingdon’s heads did not drop and Carl Self, after seeing one shot saved, then scored from 30 yards to set up an exciting finish.
