JAMES Cathcart’s late penalty earned Chinnor a 23-22 victory at Lydney after they had trailed 13-0 and 22-13.
Fly half Cathcart struck on 70 minutes before Chinnor held out in a nervy finale, but they had been a pale imitation of the side that defeated Worthing last time out.
Lydney opened the scoring on three minutes when prop Dan Allison was driven over from a lineout, while Chinnor struggled to retain possession.
Fly half Tony Wicks slotted a penalty on 11 minutes and converted a try from lock Charles Daniell, who sauntered through a hole in the defence.
Chinnor hit back with a try when centre Sam Stoop managed to off-load to wing Tom Gray, whose diagonal line took him to the posts.
Lydney rued several missed chances during the match and conceded a second try on 32 minutes after putting Chinnor under real pressure.
Chinnor’s defence forced a handling error and centre Matt Goode hacked the ball clear for Gray to kick again and win the race to score.
Cathcart made it 15-13 with a 45th-minute penalty, but a powerful rolling maul saw Lydney player-coach, former England prop Duncan Bell, go over, with Wicks converting.
Chinnor hit back when wing Leo Fielding beat two defenders to touch down Stoop’s precise grubber kick, Cathcart converting.
Lydney were penalised for going off their feet at a ruck and Cathcart punished them with the decisive penalty.
