CHINNOR snatched defeat from the jaws of victory to lose 17-15 at home to North Walsham in round one of the EDF Energy National Trophy.

They led 15-5, but were evetually undone by a stoppage time converted try in one of the longest matches ever seen at Kingsey Road.

The clock had passed the 100-minute mark before the referee finally blew for full time.

Chinnor got off to the brightest of starts with a try by centre Anthony Pyers after just three minutes.

He burst through the Walsham defence after furious pressure straight from the kick off and fly half Richard Williams converted.

Winger Iain Young's quick break set up Walsham's opening try for No 8 Sam Herrington on 25 minutes.

Williams's penalty put Chinnor 10-5 up at the break.

The hosts again started brightly in the second half and on 43 minutes prop Joe Winpenny delivered the perfect wide pass to put winger Martyn O'Mahony in for try No 2.

Chinnor were gaining increasing control, but the crucial moment came on the hour.

North Walsham conceded a penalty on the 22 in front of their posts, but Chinnor opted for a scrum.

From here, Young was able to gallop 80 metres to run in a try that gave the visitors hope.

Walsham's persistence was rewarded with a catch and drive try for prop Ed Wallace and Young completed the comeback with a touchline conversion.
