Oxfordshire were crowned Home Counties League champions in style with a crushing 162-75 win over Buckinghamshire in their final game at Thame.

Needing six points to be sure of the title, Oxon were in a commanding position after five ends as they set up a 21-1 points success.

Baden Sparkes’s four of Mick Nash, Andy McIntyre and Will Campion set the tone, picking up a hot-shot eight on the first end against skip Pat Deakin before running out 31-13 winners.

The experienced rink of Brian Bloomfield, Paul Comley, John Hardie and Calvin Carpenter ran up the highest score with a thumping 42-5 demolition of Alan Anderson.

Alan Prew, Oxon’s Middleton Cup captain, with Carterton clubmate Andy Martin and Under 25s star George Schwab and Sam Watts, were tied for the highest winning rink at one point, before having to settle for a 33-8 drubbing of Ian Harvey.

Mike Petersen and his rink of Gordon Roper, Gordon Hooker and Jim Bland always led against Brett Long, but had to fight for a 21-15 win.

Alan Ley’s Oxford City & County four of Bernie May, Mervyn Gleeson and Chris Earl were held to a 17-17 draw by Keith Stratfull.

Barry Lambourne was accompanied by president David Allin, past president Ian Whelpton and Thame’s Adrian Kemish in a tight game against Bob Doddington.

Three down going into the last end, Lambourne trailed the jack with his first wood to waiting Oxon bowls.

A measure made it four to the home side and an 18-17 win.
