Alfie Potter is determined to contribute more goals to Oxford United this season after regaining his fitness.
The winger missed the second half of last season with a broken ankle, but is now fully recovered and scored for the U’s in their final US tour game on Tuesday night – a 4-1 win against the Jim Dedeus All Star XI.
Potter scored a spectacular individual goal in his last competitive appearance, against Burton Albion in January.
But despite the 23-year-old’s talent, the strike against the Brewers was a rarity, and he has always struggled to score regularly, with the six goals in 2009/10 is the best return of his career.
With Tom Craddock and Jon-Paul Pittman also nearing fitness after injuries last season, plus new signing Sean Rigg, there is plenty of competition for places up front and Potter is aware of the need to do more than chip in with a handful of goals.
“In a forward role, you need to be scoring goals or providing assists, that’s what my aims are,” he said.
“I got a few in pre-season last year and then once the season started they all dried up. As long as I keep getting the chance I’m sure I’ll start taking them.”
Potter received a big welcome from the U’s fans on his return in the opening game of pre-season, a 1-0 win against West Ham.
The former Peterborough trainee was delighted with the response.
He said: “The fans are great anyway and they give everyone a good reception. “I just need to get back out there and repay the faith the fans have shown in me, I need to start the season well.
“I’ve waited a long time, it’s been nearly six months now and it was good to get back out there, I can’t wait for the league to start now.”
