Dan Smyth hit a hat-trick as Rover Oxford notched their first victory of the season in the South League Middlesex, Berks, Bucks & Oxon Division with a 4-2 win over South Bucks.

The game started poorly for Rover, however, as they conceded from an early short corner.

An instant reply from a Smyth corner was overshadowed by a disappointing decision that earned skipper Dave Hewstone a yellow card for a strong challenge on the Bucks centre forward.

With Rover down to ten men, Bucks were unable to make the man advantage count.

Dan Pilbeam, after clearing a short corner, ran the length of the pitch and set up Smyth for an easy finish.

The second period started in similar fashion. Sloppy defending allowed Bucks to scramble in their second, to make the scores level, but this only inspired Rover further.

Smyth completed his hat-trick with another drag flick and then went on to provide Pilbeam with his first of the season.

The points were shared in the weekend's Division 1 local derby as a last-gasp equaliser from Abingdon's Josh Tomlinson earned his side a 3-3 draw at Bicester.

Abingdon took the lead when Jonny Taylor broke through the middle and rounded the Bicester goalkeeper before forcing the ball over the line.

However, this lead didn't last for long as Bicester equalised from a penalty stroke after Abingdon's Adam Wheeler used his feet to block a shot on the line, Wayne Dobbins sending the keeper the wrong way with his flick.

Abingdon regained the lead with the goal of the match. After good work by David Pegg and Andy Ringsell, Josh Wilkinson drew the goalkeeper off his line before playing the ball to the far post where Will Trigg, at full stretch, knocked it over the line with a fine reverse stick effort.

John Roger equalised at a penalty corner and Bicester then took the lead through Dobbins' second penalty stroke, after he was bundled over by Abingdon sweeper Pegg.

Then in a dramatic finish, as Abingdon attacked in numbers, Tomlinson swooped to ram the ball home from close range.

City of Oxford came back from a goal down to defeat Harrow 3-1 and move up to third in Division 1.

They conceded a breakaway after being on top early on.

But in the second half Simon Toms levelled at a short corner and Toms scored again from open play to put City ahead. The final goal was a mishit shot from Andy Small.

Witney's superb start to the season came to an abrupt halt with a 6-1 defeat at Amersham.

Rory Bowden latched onto a Steve Scott cross to give Witney an improbable lead but by half-time Amersham had turned this around with two goals and they struck four more in the second half.
