Oxford Cavaliers old boy Darrell Griffin has signed for top-flight Super League club Huddersfield Giants.

The 25-year-old front row forward, who hails from Witney, has joined Giants from Wakefield Trinity on a three-year deal.

Griffin, at 6ft 5in and weighing over 17st, will be adding size and power to an already strong squad which reached the final of the Powergen Challenge Cup where they lost out to St Helens.

"This is my big chance to really establish myself at Super League level," said Griffin.

"I just don't think I developed as a player over the past two seasons, but I believe I will now.

"I'll be working under one of the top British coaches in the game in Jon Sharp and one of best front-rowers in our competition in Paul Anderson, who retired with St Helens on Saturday to became an assistant here.

"On top of that, I'll be teaming up again with my old England mate Eorl Crabtree and one of the best pack leaders from the Australian NRL in John Skandalis."

Crabtree has a famous pedigree, as the nephew of Shirley Crabtree, aka wrestler Big Daddy.

"If I can't improve with them around, when can I improve?" said Griffin.

"So I do see this move as a great opportunity to finally fulfil my potential and show everyone exactly what I can do.

"I left Wakefield feeling very frustrated, but I can now put all that behind me.

"Signing a three-year contract means I've got the chance to really establish myself at the Giants, which is very important.

"I really am excited about joining a club with this much potential. It has everything going for it on all fronts."

Oxford Cavaliers coach Matt Walsh was delighted to see the progress Griffin has made since learning the game in the city.

"At the Cavs, we are all very proud of the progress Darrell has made," he said. "We wish him all the best with the upcoming season."
