Division 1.

Afgan paceman Ayaz Khan produced the performance of his life to take 10-35 for Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondescripts and help beat Oxford Downs by four runs .

He became the first bowler to go through the card in the Cherwell League’s top division since Will Wright managed the feat for Aylesbury Town in 1996.

Ayaz had earlier been Nondies’ top scorer, hitting three sixes in an invaluable cameo of 23 as his side crashed to 102 all out. Put in to bat on a slow wicket, they had crawled to 19-4 from 25 overs.

Simon Watkins took 3-28 and Amin Rafiq 3-38 for Downs, who looked to be cruising to victory at 73-4.

But Ayaz produced five quick wickets when he returned for a second spell – including the vital scalp of Watkins (36) – to leave the hosts reeling on 82-9.

Rafiq (15no) brought Downs back into the game before keeper Jon Guthrie took a smart catch to remove Tom Costley and spark wild celebrations.

Ayaz’s first experience of English cricket was for Cumnor in 2003.

He arrived at Matthew Arnold School for winter nets with no kit, a rudimentary grasp of English and unaware of his date of birth.

After being cajoled into taking part, he had no idea how to bat.

But he displayed a raw talent to bowl at a rapid pace despite a stop-start approach to the wicket.

He soon became a fixture in Cumnor’s 1st XI and was a key member of the teams that won the third division title in 2004 and second division crown in 2006.

Ayaz has since joined Nondies and lost a little pace, but he has a smooth run-up and is a genuine all-rounder.

Oxfordshire legend Keith Arnold proved he is still a class act by taking 7-42 and so help Banbury 2nd dismiss Cumnor for 113.

Only Ali Morteza (31) hung around against the veteran seamer, while Jacques Pinsaloo toiled away at the other end to take 3-34.

But Arnie’s outstanding spell was not enough to guarantee victory, as Banbury then slumped to 101 all out against Adam Cook (6-19).

Leaders Horspath maintained their remarkable record of dismissing their opponents cheaply by bowling out Buckingham Town for 95.

It is the fourth consecutive week that Horspath have conceded fewer than 100 runs.

Will Eason (4-18) and Patrick Foster (3-22) did most of the damage this time, having earlier scored 48 and 39 respectively in their side’s 242-5.

The other batsman to shine was Shahbaz Ali, who hit an unbeaten 74, while Jason Ell took 3-38.

Matt Woods took 5-16 from 10.1 overs and Liam Manley claimed 4-38 from 15 as Bletchley Town were rolled over for 79 by Great & Little Tew.

Tew’s reply got off to a shaky start before Harry Smith (41no) and Curtley Slatter (32no) settled the visitors’ nerves by taking them to 80-2.

There were 492 runs and 17 wickets in the match between Great Brickhill and Leighton Buzzard Town, which finished as a draw with the scores level.

Garth Davson’s 132 was the main feature of Brickhill’s 246-8.

Tom Light then hit 78 and Phil Whatmore 71, but Doug Aris (4-70) and Nick Tweed (4-95) took the game to the wire as Town closed on 246-9.
