Rover Oxford convincingly won the big battle of Oxfordshire's two leading ladies clubs with a 4-0 victory over Oxford Hawks at Banbury Road on Saturday to stay top of Women's South Clubs' League Division 1.
Rover started off strongly, scoring within the first 40 seconds. A quick pass from Laura Smyth found Vicky Mankelow, who touched the ball past the sleepy Hawks defence.
A diving reaction save from Caroline McCulloch denied Emma Batten from Hawks' first attempt at goal.
Hawks soon had another good chance when Batten played a pinpoint cross to Wendy Gundry, but she was quickly closed down and her strike was saved by McCulloch.
Some excellent strong defensive work from Caro Brebner, Suzie Williams (pictured left), Jess Rickman and Becca Demczak prevented the home team from scoring again before half-time.
Rover dominated again at the start of the second half, keeping Hawks sweeper Jo Hopkins busy at the back.
At the other end, a typical driving Batten run and precision pass under her shoulder found Kelly Fodgen with just McCulloch to beat, but the Rover keeper did well.
Then a Hawks short corner was quickly broken down, with Williams passing a superb ball to Tacita Haines which resulted in Anna Nicholson scoring Rover's second goal.
Positive attacking play led to a short corner, struck by Emily Buckwell. The shot was saved by the Hawks keeper, and then some scrappy play resulted in Rover's third, slotted away by Tacita Haines.
Hawks were unable to respond to Rover's attacking formation and a skilful run by Kim Watkins from the halfway line, combined with good passing from Nicholson, resulted in Watkins diving at the ball to score No 4.
West Witney tired badly as they crashed 10-3 to a strong Surbiton side in their Division 2 match in Surrey.
They started slowly and were punished within the first three minutes with Surbiton scoring two quick goals.
Witney settled and got into the game, pressurising the Surbiton defence, and a well-worked short corner saw captain Sadie Lapper bring the score back to 2-1.
Surbiton, however, got a third before half-time.
At the start of the second half, Witney started strongly and were rewarded with a second goal, again from Lapper from another short corner.
Witney worked hard, but were exposed by a strong Surbiton midfield and attack, who linked well and created any number of chances.
Surbiton scored six goals in quick succession.
Witney pulled a late goal back with another short corner goal from Kelly Scott, but Surbiton capitalised on a tired Witney to reach double figures.
