Harwell have one hand on the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Championship crown after a thrilling last-gasp victory 30-29 victory at Aylesbury Athletic. Only a bizarre turn of events can prevent them finishing in top spot.
They came from behind to lead 16-10 at half-time thanks to a try by veteran prop Steve Pitts, plus a conversion and three penalties from Dave Beaven, to a converted try and a penalty from the home side.
An early second-half try brought Athletic to within a point at 16-15, but two further penalties from Beaven kept Harwell clear, and a try from Andy Lee appeared to have settled it at 27-15.
However, a frantic last ten minutes saw Aylesbury score two converted tries to snatch a 29-27 lead with less than five minutes remaining.
This set the scene for Beaven to slot a late penalty and take his personal tally to 20 points as he sealed the match for Harwell.
Abingdon proved too strong for Wheatley in their derby, running out 28-11 winners.
Visitors Wheatley led 6-0 at half-time, but Abingdon stepped up a gear in the second half with tries coming from Michael Nicol (2), Luke Matthews and Mark Roberts, the latter converting all four.
A Wheatley centre was red-carded for punching in the second half.
