ANGUS Brettell scored four tries as Wallingford fought back from 14-0 down to defeat Alchester 29-14 at the Hithercroft.

Alchester took the lead when Jack Briggs intercepted skipper Pete Holton’s pass and raced in from 60 metres for Tom Miles, who was later sin-binned, to convert.

Minutes later, Andy Blacklock bagged Alchester’s second try, Miles converting.

Alchester’s Tom Barnes was yellow-carded before fly half Brettell spotted a gap for Wallingford’s opening try, converted by wing Ben Selwood Centre Johnny Collett cut a fine line for try No 2, while Brettell blasted over to make it 17-14 at the break.

Wallingford had flanker James Norris sin-binned, but held out well.

Brettell completed his hat-trick after some nifty hands by lock Tom Rowberry, while Alchester’s Tom Isles was sin-binned for a late challenge on Brettell.

Chasing a fifth try, Wallingford had Brettell held up, but the same player added his fourth.

Holton was yellow-carded late on for a dangerous tackle.

A hat-trick of tries from Guy Nicholl helped Grove to a morale-boosting 43-13 victory at Wootton Bassett.

Bassett went ahead with a penalty, but Grove replied with a try from the returning Jamie Burns, converted by wing Harry Carr.

Burns’s fellow centre Tom Clipsham bagged try No 2 after fly half Dave Maryon’s dummy, Carr converting.

Wing Nicholl evaded five or six tackles for his first score, while Carr ran in an interception try early in the second half.

A Bassett try reduced the deficit to 24-8 before Carr conjured up an even better interception score.

The hosts went over again and Grove full back Huw Lewis was sin-binned.

Nicholl showed great awareness with a late brace, converting the first himself and leaving stand-in fly half Owen Gustafson to do likewise to the second.
