Jolly Poacher, the greyhound that set Sandy Lane alight when winning his third successive Oxfordshire Gold Cup last year, is set for a return to racing at Cowley.
Poacher, who also holds the record as the only dog to win the three main local trophies in a year – the Maiden Derby, Oxfordshire Stakes and the Oxfordshire Gold Cup – has failed to settle in Ireland as a stud dog.
Trainer Nick Colton is now set to bring him back to a track where he is undoubtedly one of the favourite hounds of the last few years with the punters.
Poacher won the £7,000 Swindon Arc two years’ ago.
Meanwhile, Colton has high hopes of a live Derby prospect in Ballycowan Dave, a recent five-figure sum purchase.
l OXFORD racing manager Gary Baiden was none too pleased with the standard of racing at last week’s BAGS meeting.
So much so, that ten hounds were put back to re-trial.
“There were a lot of dogs that ran below my expectations and will be called back for more trials,” Baiden said.
