CHINNOR head coach Jason Bowers has urged his players to remember their Barnstaple pain in tomorrow’s National 3 South West crunch clash at leaders Bournemouth.
Defeat at home to Barnstaple in their last match ended second-placed Chinnor’s remarkable run of 20 straight league wins.
It could be argued this happened at the worst possible time – ahead of their league title showdown – but Bowers prefers to think positively.
“Losing against Barnstaple was a shock, but the run had to end at some point,” said Bowers.
“Barnstaple deserved their win, but there is no better time than this Saturday to start a new winning run.
“We will go there full of confidence. We have won 20 games this season and beaten Bourn-emouth at home.”
Bowers added: “No one enjoyed the feeling after Barnstaple.
“We don’t want to come in and feel like that again.”
Bowers has named an unchanged squad, which includes prolific wing Mark Chase, but said there would be one or two late fitness tests.
Bowers added: “We’ll approach the game as if we are going to win the league.
“It has been the most amazing journey so far this season.
“Saturday is a huge game and it will have a big say over what happens, but I think the league will have a few more twists and turns.”
Bournemouth have scored more than 1,000 points this season and forwards coach Tim Collier feels they have every reason to be confident.
He said: “We know that if we perform, we don’t need to change anything because everything is in place already.
“We are one of the only teams in this league who can play nine or ten phases before a stoppage.
“Hopefully, we will be the fitter team out on the park and that will give us a bit of an advantage.”
Manager Steve Chadbone has set Oxford Harlequins the target of winning their next two games to ensure survival.
Chadbone believes that victory at Exmouth tomorrow and at home to relegation rivals Amersham & Chiltern next week will see Quins beat the drop.
“If we can get that I am pretty confident that will keep us up,” he said.
Tom Jelley comes in at centre for the unavailable Martin Nutt, while Sam Steventon starts at hooker and Jonathan Hall at prop, with Matt Edney set to be on the bench provided he passes a late fitness test on his infected arm.
Quins Academy prop Sean Brooks is also on the bench along with lock Will Clayton, who has been out for three weeks with a knee ligaments injury. Andy Noyce and Ramen Farahani are unavailable.
Full back Paul Trendell misses Henley Hawks’ clash with relegation candidates Lydney in National 2 South at Dry Leas due to injury.
Skipper Tom Allen slots into his position, with Ali James taking over from him in the centre.
Tim Muller is unavailable for Witney’s trip to High Wycombe in South West 1 East.
Rich Haire and James Lamb return to the squad.
