Oxford City can feel aggrieved at not gaining at least a point frorm their visit to Evos-Stik Southern League Premier Division play-off rivals Stourbridge on Saturday.
The 2-0 scoreline in no way reflects the pattern of play thanks to an inspired performance from the Stourbridge keeper Lewis Solly.
Solly was lucky early on when City striker Steve Basham charged down the keeper’s attempted clearance, and the ball rebounded into the net.
But the effort was disallowed for a supposed handball.
Stourbridge built on that luck by taking the lead in the 13th minute when Leon Broadhurst netted from a rebound following a save by City keeper Jason Mooney.
Aaron Woodley went close for City from Chris Willmott’s pass.
The hosts had another escape when Solly could only push Basham well-struck shot skywards.
As the ball dropped over him towards the goal, it was cleared off the line.
The Glassboys keeper was constantly in action in the second half, having to deal with an effort from Woodley and powerful strikes from Basham and substitute Felipe Barcelos, which he stopped brilliantly.
At the other end, Mooney made a decent save from Sean Rock.
It was an even contest, but Stourbridge made sure of the points a minute into stoppage time, when Ben Billingham slipped the ball past Mooney, leaving City wondering how they had nothing to show for their efforts.
The result dropped City to fourth spot, just a point ahead of Stourbridge, who occupy the final play-off position.
Oxford City: Mooney, Clarke, Blossom, Ballard (Bell 87), Pond, Willmott, Benjamin (Learoyd 76), Malone, Basham, Woodley (Barcelos 67), Isaac. Subs not used: Lyon, Martin.
