Chris Wilder says that Oxford United beat off competition from several higher-division teams to sign striker Oli Johnson.

The 24-year-old left Norwich City earlier in the week by mutual consent having spent much of the last year at Yeovil Town on loan.

The forward played a key role in getting Norwich promoted from League One in 2010 and has joined United until the end of the season.

Boss Wilder said: “I know there were five or six clubs in higher divisions chasing his signature, but we are delighted that he has seen what we are building here and wants to be a part of it.

“It speaks volumes for the club that he wants to prove himself here.

“Oli is an exciting prospect and he has a great chance to impress.

“He knows there are areas of his game he needs to work on, but he has real talent and we look forward to working with him.”

Johnson goes straight into the squad for today’s game with Hereford, and will wear the No 19 shirt.
