Henrietta Knight has confirmed that Somersby is a likely starter in the 25th Anniversary of Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot on Saturday, January 21.

Knight had indicated that the eight-year-old star of her West Lockinge stables, near Wantage, would be given a break after finishing fourth to Kauto Star in the William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day.

But now he is set to be dropped back in distance for a race he was beaten a short head in by Master Minded 12 months ago.

“I put him back in a two-mile race because he ran so well in this race last year against Master Minded,” Knight said.

“He ran over three miles last time and I’m sure he stays that far, but he’s one of those horses that could run at any distance.

“It’s certainly on the cards that he’ll run at Ascot.”

Finian’s Rainbow, last season’s Arkle Trophy second, and leading novice Al Ferof are also due to line up.

Meanwhile, Knight made it three winners in five days when Ballygarvey got off the mark at Lingfield yesterday.

Sent off the 5-6 favourite, the six-year-old made virtually all the running under Will Kennedy to beat Fermoyle Flyer by a length and three-quarters in a novices’ hurdle over an extended two miles and three furlongs.

“He’s a sweet little horse and I’m very pleased for the owners (The Dark Horse Syndicate) as it’s their first winner,” said Knight.
