CHINNOR director of rugby Lynn Evans is tipping Australian centre Anthony Pyers to be a star in National 3 South.

And he believes the team are making progress despite a topsy-turvy start in the division.

Pyers has only played three matches since joining Chinnor from Brisbane's Brothers club, but has already scored two tries in some commanding displays.

Evans said: "He is a very strong boy and he picks some lovely running lines.

"I think he is going to be a real star in this division.

"The way he took his try against Dings Crusaders shows what a threat the can be."

Pyers, 23, travelled to Oxfordshire with Brothers' teammate Andrew Coady, who made his debut against Dings.

He said: "We both decided to come over and an agent let us know which clubs were looking for players.

"The opportunity came up that Chinnor were looking for a prop and a winger, so we decided to go together.

"In my last season I was injured quite a lot, so it seemed a good time to come over.

"We both waited behind for the grand final because Brothers were in it."

Pyers added: "I've played winger all my life at Brothers except one year when I moved inside to centre.

"I certainly like the position as you get to see more of the ball.

"In Australia we play a less mauling, more quick ball type game, but I'm liking it here.

"I have got my season at home in May and I may come back after that.

"Hopefully I will do some travelling in between."

What sort of presence does Pyers have on the field?

He said: "I like to put my two cents in to motivate the boys. I do like to shout, but I don't do any speeches before the game."

Pyers has yet to win a game with Chinnor, but said: "I think we were a lot better against Dings. We came back well and showed a big heart.

"We've just got to do it for the full 80 minutes."

Evans has also been delighted with the form of lock Matt Hutchins this season.

He added: "I think we can match sides in this league. Dings are a side we should be on a fairly even par with.

"We just lack a little bit of general pace. We need some more zip in attacking situations.

"At the moment, we are not performing for long enough periods, but with these new players it just takes time. Half the team has changed since last year.

"There's still a lot of work to do, but we have only had one bad beating.

"It shows we are not far off, but winning your home games will be crucial."
