Oxford Hawks were edged out 2-0 by Old Georgians in their first match at Weybridge on Sunday in Slazenger National League South Division.
Georgians, relegated from Division 1 last season, were well organised, but Hawks were left feeling that they could have got something out of the game.
Hawks' defence was in solid form with Craig Perks and Nick Styles looking resolute.
Hawks hit an upright from a penalty corner before Georgians took the lead through Giles Wood.
The home side nicked another goal early in the second half through Patrick Kelly then enjoyed a period of sustained pressure which Hawks did well to survive.
Hawks could not complain at the final outcome against a team they will meet again in Oxford next weekend in the second round of the National Knock-Out Cup.
