Promoted Oxford Hawks made an excellent start with a 4-2 victory at Wimbledon 1A in their Women's South League Division 1 debut - with Emma Batten (pictured) smashing all four goals.

They took the lead after just five minutes. Batten collected Kelly Fogden's pass and drove through the Wimbledon defence to finish with a clean slap into the back of the goal from a tight angle.

Wimbledon soon equalised from a short corner and it was 1-1 at half-time. The second half followed a similar pattern with a well-worked early goal in open play from Batten. As before, Wimbledon quickly responded from a short corner.

For the next ten minutes Hawks were under constant pressure, but superb defending, especially from Janet Graham, kept out the home side.

It remained level until the last two minutes when Hawks took control.

Fi Walton made a superb break, driving down the field before she found Batten, who cut in and struck cleanly into the goal.

Batten was on a roll and when Hawks took possession and got the ball through to her she was unstoppable, breaking down the Wimbledon defence, bringing the keeper down and pushing the ball over the line and leaving it too late for Wimbledon to respond.

Rover Oxford also opened the season with a fine away win, crushing Woking 1A 5-3 in Surrey.

Rover began the game sharply, pressing the Woking defence at every opportunity.

Woking scored in the 27th minute against the run of play but Rover fought back in the next three minutes to level.

Woking quickly responded in the next minute and went ahead again.

But a hard and flat short corner strike by Suzanne Williams was deflected over the goalkeeper.

Tacita Haines, on her debut for Rover, scored in the 34th minute which allowed the visitors to go into the half-time break 2-1 up.

Rover conceded a penalty stroke which Caroline McCulloch was unlucky not to save.

But it didn't take Rover long to reaffirm their authority and Haines scored within the next minute.

Rover remained strong with excellent play from newcomers Jess Rickman, Takara Haines and Lexi Pantelli.

Rover confirmed the victory in the final five minutes when Williams struck a penalty corner which was played into her own goal by a Woking defender.

It was an all-Wimbledon weekend for Oxford Hawks at the weekend with the team travelling back there on Sunday to play their 1sts in an HA Cup first-round game.

The National League side always had the upper hand and ran out 5-0 winners.

But Hawks gave them a good run for their money, and were surprisingly on top in the first 15 minutes, but couldn't convert.

Once Wimbledon scored, they gathered momentum and asserted their authority, taking a 3-0 lead by half-time.
