NEIL Lyon won his third Oxford singles title with a hard-fought victory over Steve Ward at the league’s finals’ night.

More than 300 people saw the Three Pigeons man claim the crown after a thrilling battle with his Six Bells Kidlington opponent.

All three legs had to be decided on a three or one-stick throw-off, with Lyon setting every leg.

In the opening game, Lyon could muster only two, which Ward just matched.

Lyon then hit another brace in the three-stick shoot-out, and Ward could manage just one in reply.

The next leg was tied 4-4, with three sticks still unable to separate the duo.

But when Lyon missed with his one stick, Ward took the match to a third leg.

Lyon looked like he would win the match after setting four, but Ward was up to the task, doing likewise.

But it was Lyon who held his nerve in the shoot-out to take the crown for the third time.

Glyn Millard, from the Fairview Inn, came from behind to beat Cricketers’ A Paul Burden in the Ted Houghton Supplementary singles.

Burden won the first leg 3-2, but lost the next two 3-2 and 4-3.

In the Oxford pairs, Barry Townsend and Phil Adams (Cricketers B) had a comfortable win over the Ruffles brothers, from Garsington Sports.

They set an incredible score of 11 in the opening leg, with Townsend hitting a six.

The duo then passed a target of six in the second leg to secure the trophy.

Clive Walsh and Barry Mudd defeated the father and son partnership of Tony and Lee Gillett 2-0 in the lower pairs final.

Den and Pete Sellar, from Cricketers B, beat Andy and Craig Beal 2-0 in the Parent & Child Trophy.

White Hart Eynsham claimed the Monty Greenaway Shield for the first time after beating The George 2-0, and Cricketers A defeated Fair-view A 2-0 in the Oxford fours competition.

Daniel Collier, from Florence Park Club, saw off holder Elliot Greenough 2-1 in the Under 18’s final.

Greenough, from Garsington Sports, won the first leg 2-0, however Collier levelled.

Collier then set two in the final leg, enough to give him victory.

Premier champions Cric-keters B doubled up by demolishing Three Pigeons 2-0 in the Greene King Cup.

They set 29 in the first leg, with Adams smashing a six.

Three Pigeons fell ten short – and then having set 24 in the next, saw their title hopes disappear as anchor man Den Sellar knocked off the winning doll with his first stick.

Cricketers A defeated Fairview Inn A 2-0 in the Jim Whitbread Cup.
