Oxford University say they did all they could to inform supporters Wasps had pulled out of Monday night’s match at Iffley Road.

The Dark Blues defeated a largely scratch squad of Henley players, with a few Wasps junior academy players thrown in.

Many supporters, including a number of Wasps fans, were left disappointed when the visiting line-up was announced.

Oxford University general manager Tim Stevens said: “We knew on Friday it wasn’t going to be the line-up we had originally thought, but that it was more likely to be half Wasps and half Henley.

“That changed over the weekend, but we didn’t pick up the message.

“When we did, we put the message on our website.”

Head coach James Wade, who is also Wasps’ high performance manager, said: “Lots of Wasps players are dual-registered with clubs who have British and Irish Cup games this weekend.

“Added to that, Wasps have an injury crisis, so it could not have been a worse time for the fixture.”

Dark Blues fan Roger King said: “It was disappointing. I wonder if supporters will be apprehensive about the next game and what side London Welsh will send down?”

Wasps’ head of media Alison Donelly said: “We announced the postponement over the weekend.

“This didn’t happen at late notice, it happened early in the weekend.

“As it was an Oxford home game, it was their responsibility to get the word out.

“Postponements at ‘A’ team level happen regularly – there was, and is, a story on the front page of our website about this which was up from Sunday night.”
