JAKE Wright has agreed a new deal at Oxford United which could see him stay at the club until the summer of 2015.

The U’s club captain had a year-and-a-half remaining on his present deal, but has put pen to paper on a one-year extension, with the option of a further year after that.

And both player and club are delighted that the 25-year-old has pledged his future to the club.

Boss Chris Wilder said that the centre back has been watched by several other clubs, but is pleased that his skipper has pledged his future to the U’s.

“Jake has been excellent for us,” Wilder commented.

“He is very consistent and is a great professional on and off the pitch.

“He has been coveted by a lot of clubs, not just in our league, but he wants to be part of what we are trying to build here.

“We are delighted that he has agreed this new deal.”

Wright moved to Oxford in January 2009 on loan from Brighton.

But after a series of impressive displays which helped the U’s win promotion back into the Football League, the former Bradford and Halifax player agreed a three-year deal.

He was named club captain in the summer, and this season has forged a great partnership with Michael Duberry at the heart of the United back line – which at present has the best defensive record in npower League Two.

“I have been made to feel at home ever since I came through the doors,” Wright said.

“It is an ambitious club and I really want to be part of what is being built here.

“I want to play at the highest level I can and would love that to be with Oxford United.”
