Oxford University ran out ultimately comfortable winners against stand-in opponents in a 35-0 triumph at Iffley Road last night.

Wasps were the Dark Blues’ scheduled opponents, but provided just a handful of junior academy boys to entertain the 1,100-plus crowd.

The remainder and vast majority of their team comprised of Henley squad players, who acquitted themselves well and their club deserve credit for stepping in.

Officially due to injuries and many of their A squad having played on Saturday, Wasps’ decision was taken at short notice, with the fixture listed as ‘postponed’ on their website.

The visitors’ coaching staff were also from Henley, but Wasps did at least provide white shirts for the players!

Oxford took the lead with a fifth-minute penalty from wing Cassian Bramham-Law after bursts from flanker Derek Asbun and lock Karl Outen set up a good position.

But it was hardly a dominant start from the Dark Blues, who gave away a series of penalties and struggled to find any fluency in their backs.

So it was with some relief when Bramham-Law slotted a second penalty from long range on 25 minutes.

Captain John Carter did his best rouse his troops with some big carries, while Bramham-Law landed a third penalty on the half-hour.

The crowd finally had something to cheer when Bram-ham-Law went close from fly half Tom Mitchell’s break, but he couldn’t control the ball.

Oxford did cut through late in the half via centre Baz Perkins, who off-loaded for wing Sean Morris to score, Bramham-Law converting.

Bramham-Law missed a penalty soon after the break, then saw his side repeatedly penalised.

It took until 57 minutes for replacement hooker AJ Connor to sprint through for try No 2, Bramham-Law converting for 23-0.

The Dark Blues were creating more chances and Asbun was soon powering through for a third try, converted by Bramham-Law.

‘Wasps’ had flanker Dave Wells sin-binned and were punished with a try from Scott Fernquest on 71 minutes.

That was it for the scoring and at least the Dark Blues could reflect on two successive wins and 80 points scored.
