Chinnor 66, Oxford Harlequins 3

Make no mistake, this was a demolition derby.

Chinnor crushed Oxford Harlequins 66-3 in a ten-try romp, which was their biggest victory over their local rivals.

Centre Sam Stoop bagged a hat-trick of tries as Chinnor maintained their National 3 South West promotion push.

Quins’ pack competed well throughout, but it was the weak tackling of their backs allied to Chinnor’s scintillating pace and precision that made this such a one-side scoreline.

Remarkably, Chinnor could have scored more tries, but I am sure they would have taken ten before kick-off.

Quins’ new head coach Tevita Vaikona was unable to watch the match due to commitments with Magdalen College School, but he should be in no doubt how much work is required to avoid a relegation battle.

The visitors began by securing plenty of territory, but Chinnor’s opening try on seven minutes indicated what was to follow.

Stoop simply carved through the supposed defensive line and fly half James Cathcart, who had played him in, converted.

Quins’ wing Martin Nutt escaped a yellow card for a high tackle on Chinnor full back Mark Chase, while Stoop was denied a second try due to crossing.

Lock Will Claytn won plenty of line-out ball for Quins, but fly half Alex Stevenson missed two kickable penalties.

Visiting full back Paddy Smith was sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on – and Chinnor bagged 14 points with him off the field.

Stoop slipped through a slack defence for the first, while the second saw wing Pip Seymour collect Cathcart’s superb cross-kick and chip ahead to touch down.

Cathcart converted Stoop’s effort and try No 4 from centre Matt Goode, who hit the line at real pace.

It was 26-0 at half-time and 40-0 five minutes into the second half.

Stoop motored in for his treble, while Seymour finished an electric blindside move involving No 8 Liam Gilbert, scrum half Frank Jones and Chase. Cathcart converted both.

Quins then enjoyed a period of relative parity, although bizarrely opted to kick a penalty through Stevenson.

It got Quins on the scoreboard, but showed Chinnor their lack of ambition.

Chase was again the victim of a high tackle, with Quins replacement Alasdair Mapero lucky to avoid a yellow card.

However, the resulting penalty set up a driving maul from which lock Andy Smith went over.

The floodgates then re-opened, with Goode able to canter in for try No 8, Cathcart converting.

Chinnor hooker Simon Tattersall was unlucky to be sin-binned for a straight-arm tackle on Stevenson, who had slipped over.

But this did not stem the tide, with Chase cruising in from Stoop’s pass and Gilbert bagging the tenth try after Chinnor created an overlap on the left, Cathcart converting both.
