Chris Wilder says his team are already relishing the fantastic atmosphere that will be created at the Kassam Stadium this weekend.
Oxford United’s clash with Bristol Rovers has been dubbed ‘Ultimate Support Saturday’ by U’s fans, and is set to produce their biggest home gate of the season.
Wilder knows that with the opposition having already sold more than 1,000 tickets, that is sure to spark the home faithful into full voice – something he is convinced will bring the best out of his side.
“Since I have been here, every time a visiting team has brought a large amount of supporters with them here, our fans raise their levels too,” he said.
“I am expecting a real cracking atmosphere on Saturday and am sure that the players will all respond to that.”
United have recorded only one home victory this season, but are still unbeaten at the Kassam Stadium in six league matches.
“I have said it before, but of course it’s important we win in front of our own supporters and put a good show on,” he commented.
“There are always different ways of looking at the stats, but I have to say that generally, our play at home this season has been very good.
“There have been times when we have been excellent, other times not so, but we all know and accept that ultimately we haven’t got enough wins.”
And what does United’s boss put that down to?
“I’ve never really felt that the players at home play with any fear and are scared to get on the ball,” he said.
“There are times when it just might not happen – passes can go astray and things might not work, but what I do preach to the players is that they have to keep getting on the ball.
“We have some very talented footballers here, and it will happen for them – especially with the supporters right behind them.”
It is a view echoed by full backs Damian Batt and Liam Davis.
“The fans here are always brilliant,” Batt said.
“We all want to play in front of really big crowds, like there is going to be on Saturday, and I’m sure that the fans will get right behind us like they normally do and hopefully can help us get the victory.”
Davis added: “We are definitely due a home win.
“We have been ahead in matches here, but have ended up drawing too many so we want to make sure we put that right.
“The supporters have been terrific all season and it would be great to give them three points and make sure that everyone goes home really happy.”
