Banbury went down 4-1 at Oxford University in South Clubs Women's League Division 2.
A deflection from a short corner put the students ahead, but with Ali Sturla, Kirstina Bull, Lara Wilkinson and Vicky Page to the fore, Banbury battled back and Tasha Nunnely was unlucky not to level the score.
Two more short-corners goals made it 3 -0 at half-time, before Lara Wilkinson dived in at the far post to bring Banbury back into the picture.
This seemed to galvanise the students as they increased their lead, and it took a fine save from Banbury keeper Susie Pollock to prevent a fifth.
Oxford started their campaign with an exciting 4-4 draw at Harrow.
Caro Harris converted a Catherine Reaney cross to put Oxford ahead and they went 2-0 up when Lyn Cockshott squared the ball for Kim Haynes to slot home.
Oxford’s third was a carbon copy of the second goal, with Cockshott giving Haynes another clear chance to put away before Harrow reduced the arrears from a penalty corner.
Harrow, relegated from South 1 last season, made it 3-2, only for Haynes to complete her hat-trick and restore Oxford’s two-goal cushion.
But Harrow piled on the pressure and pulled another back, before snatching the equaliser from a penalty corner in the dying seconds.
Oxford Hawks went down 2-1 to Ipswich in the English League’s Conference East.
Anna French was their goalscorer.
Witney recorded their second win of the season in Trysports Division 3A, beating Chiswick 4-2.
Witney raced into a 3-0 lead before half-time with a deflected goal from Karen Easterbrook, and strikes from Joy Mangazi and Hannah Jarvis.
Chiswick then came out hard in the second half and pulled it back to 3-2, but a thumping strike from Mangazi settled matters.
Wallingford also made it two out of two as they saw off Staines 2nd 3-0 at the Hithercroft.
Tally Fisher, Christona Martin and Jude Turner were on the mark.
Bicester put six goals past Maidenhead without reply in Premier 2 of the Trysports 3-Counties League.
Jan Southam and Amy Richardson were on the mark in the first half, and four more goals followed after the break from Lisa Rya (2), Kath Crook and Hannah Newell.
Bicester’s back three of Chloe Ranson, Yvonne Jackson and George Newell were outstanding.
