Berinsfield’s Ronan Wad-ley, 13, began the new season in style with a points victory over Ben Stevens at Aldershot.
The Oxfordshire teenager was always the more inventive of the pair in this all southpaw clash, landing successive clusters of well-placed shots to head and body.
And the impact from his attacks to the midriff became more pronounced as the bout progressed.
Well adrift, Stevens tried to rally in a final round toe-to-toe battle, but could not match his rival’s hand speed and had no complaints when the judges delivered a unanimous verdict.
Berinsfield are staging ‘ladies only’ sessions on Mondays, starting at 6.30 pm.
The weekly training nights are open to those who want to either take up boxing competitively or who are just looking to keep fit and are run by ABA coach Naomi Hill.
Preparations are under way for the first championships of the season – the Clubs for Young People (CYP) titles, formerly known as the Boys Clubs championships.
Oxford Boxing Academy have four entries: Bradley Townsend (under 16 featherweight), his elder brother Clinton (under 18 bantamweight), Ben Kaluza (under 18 light middleweight) and George Stevens (under 17 welterweight).
