THE practice match for tomorrow’s Oxford Winter League was fished by 38 on the Clifton Hampden and Dorchester stretches of the Thames and produced some decent weights.
The river is still painfully slow and clear, which means is that the fish are tightly packed in some areas, while others are seemingly devoid of fish.
Gary Barclay (Drennan GOT Baits) triumphed with 18.10.0 from the bottom end peg in the hotel field on the Clifton stretch. He caught quality perch on worm and roach on caster on the pole at 11 metres.
Gary Herman (Sensas A4) was second with 15.8.0 from the oak tree near the bottom of the Dorchester stretch, catching chub on the feeder and maggot. He lost a couple of big chub that cost him dearly.
Third place went to Malcolm Pearce (Fox ISIS) with 13.9.0 from the deep water in the hotel field at Clifton, an all-perch bag on worm over chop on the pole.
He also lost three huge perch.
Littlemore fished the third and final round of their Aggregate Cup over at Boddington, where Paul Willoughby made the most of an end peg on the yacht station side to top the 12-man field.
Water levels are down by about 5ft, which had some effect on the fishing.
Willoughby triumphed with 11 carp for 79.12.0 on the method feeder and bomb with pellet.
Nick Collier used the same tactics to catch ten carp for a second-placed 64.8.0, and Brian Hutchings ret-urned 54.8.0, comprising six carp and some roach on the bomb with pellet for third place.
Collier won the three-match series with a combined weight of 134.11.0, beating Willoughby into second place with 119.2.0.
Thirteen anglers turned out for Tackley’s Timms Autumn Cup fished at Lower Court Farm.
At the final whistle, Frank Malone emerged the victor with 34.4.0 on pole and maggot down the edge.
John Spencer fished worm to catch carp and tench for a second-placed 25.12.00,and third with 24.8.0 was Dave Clarke (Predator).
Twelve Coldstone anglers fished the Thames at Medley, with Brian Ballard coming out on top.
He had 11.2.0, a mixed bag of roach, perch, dace, gudgeon and chublets on pole and maggot.
Garry Didcock was runner-up with 10.8.0, comprising two bream and some perch, and John Swann had 9.8.0, mainly roach to a pound on waggler and caster, for third.
