ABINGDON’S Poppy Smith won the Level 3 competition at the Alpha Factor Open in Melksham, Wiltshire.

Smith, 15, beat a field of 18 gymnasts in the national standard event at Wiltshire School of Gymnastics.

The Abingdon GC member and Year 11 pupil at Fitzharry’s School, notched a score of 12.500 on the floor and an overall total of 46.050 with vault, beam and bars included.

“This is an amazing achievement as Poppy has suffered painful Osgood Schlatter’s in her knees, which has hampered her training,” said her mum Sara Mitchell-Smith.

“We are very proud of her.”
