DAMIAN Batt is hoping that he has done enough in the last couple of games to keep his place in the Oxford United side for tomorrow’s clash at Barnet.
The right back, who has been one of the mainstays of the club’s success over the past few seasons, started the first two matches this season, but found himself on the bench until he was recalled for Tuesday’s trip to Dagenham.
Andy Whing had displaced Batt as first choice, but came off ill after just 24 minutes of Saturday’s draw with Burton.
And Batt is hoping that he has impressed sufficiently both when replacing Whing, and then after playing the full 90 minutes at Dagenham to get the nod tomorrow.
“It has been frustrating for me because over the past few seasons I’ve been used to playing every week,” he said.
“When I’ve come back in, it has been a case of trying to play well and reminding people what I can do.
“I haven’t put any more pressure on myself, I have just tried to do what I have done before when I have got the chance.”
Whing will return to the squad for tomorrow’s match with boss Chris Wilder having to decide whether to make any changes from the side that beat Dagenham.
But Batt is hoping that the clean sheet and good team display on Tuesday will count in his favour.
“It was great to get the win on Tuesday night, and especially keeping a clean sheet too,” he said.
“It was one of those games that you had to do everything you could to get the win, but we managed to do it by again playing some really good football.
“We have been frustrated in the last few games because we’ve been creating chances and not taking them, and then the opposition have been scoring goals despite not really creating anything.
“But it was great to be able to this time put both the performance and result together.”
Meanwhile, there could be a new face in the United squad for Saturday’s match.
Wilder says that the club are talking to a potential target, but isn’t sure whether a deal will be sorted before they take on Barnet.
“We still feel that we are maybe one short,” he said.
“If we can get one in great, but if not then we will just go with what we’ve got.”
