Former Oxford University winger Simon Danielli was left rueing the one that got away – despite being Scotland’s two-try hero in their opening World Cup win over Romania in Invercargill.
Danielli touched down twice in the last five minutes as Scotland responded from falling 24-21 down to win Sunday’s Pool B tie 34-24.
“We scored a couple of good tries and should have scored another if a silly winger hadn’t tried to step inside and go under the posts,” said Danielli, who won two Blues in the Oxford sides which triumphed in the Varsity Matches of 1999 and 2000.
“We were points up and credit to them they clawed their way back into it. It’s about being more ruthless.
“It’s nice to score tries, but I’m fairly hyper-critical – I wish it had been a hat-trick.”
