Oxford Rugby will take to the field next season after being approved as the name for the city’s newly-merged club.
Executive members of the new club, which joined together Oxford and Oxford Harlequins, felt the name “ticked all the boxes”, according to chairman Ron Macdonald.
The merger was not completed before June 1, so the clubs are competing separately this season, but Oxford Rugby will field five sides in 2012-13.
Macdonald said: “We had a range of suggestions for the new club name and discussed the merits of each one of them to see how they fitted with our brand, aspirations, objectives and our position as the premier rugby club in the city.
“We also decided to revive the tradition of naming our individual teams so next season, the teams will be known as Quins (first team), Nomads, Dons, Proctors and Provosts.”
Macdonald is now inviting members to suggest a logo and club colours.
Meanwhile, Oxford Rugby are holding fire on their planned new clubhouse development for financial reasons.
