KENNINGTON Club survived an almighty scare before scraping through against Masons A in the Johnsons Buildbase Oxford League’s Threes competition at the Democrats Club, writes PETE EWINS.
They came from 2-0 down to tie the match 3-3, and progressed 20,500-16,440 on aggregate.
Kennington made a disastrous start when Mark Trafford lost a break of more than 13,000 to let in Alan Lowe, who put Masons in front.
Maxi McDonnell then made it 2-0 with victory over Ian Gordon.
Pauline Withey pulled a game back with a last-ball 3,470-3,440 win over Mick Murphy, before Trafford (9,950) squared the match at 2-2.
McDonnell (4,610) regained the lead for Masons, only to see Withey win her second leg and give Kennington an aggregate victory.
Democrats Club also went through on aggregate with victory over Headington Conservative Club at the Vikings.
Keith Hollis (4,500 & 6,460) and Sid Ponting (3,270) were Headington’s winners, while Terry Green and Richard Garrett (8,280 & 5,710) were Democrats’ winners.
Gladiators Club beat Masons B 4-2 at Headington Conservative Club.
In a low-scoring match, Phil Clark (3,450) top scored for Gladiators, with Chris Webb (3,740) shining for Masons.
Comrades Club also went through after beating Berinsfield 4-2 at the Dolphin.
Adam Thorn (2,690 & 5,340) won both his legs.
In the pairs competition, Dennis Atkins and Jenny Florey beat Melissa Standbridge and Kirsty Jarvis 3-0.
