Three goals in the first 13 minutes helped Banbury surged up to second place in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division table – the highest placing in their 80-year history - with a 5-2 win at Evesham United.
Banbury took the lead in the fifth minute, when Aaron Woodley and Will Green set up Glenn Walker, who side-stepped his marker before curling an unstoppable shot around the stranded keeper Nathan Vaughan.
They doubled their advantage in the 12th minute when Evesham failed to clear Walker’s free-kick and Simeon Williams beat two defenders before cracking the ball home from just inside the penalty area.
Straight from the kick-off, Banbury added a third goal when Woodley beat the offside trap, and side-footed the ball to Green, who tapped it home from five yards.
Before half-time Banbury suffered two injuries.
Oxford United scholar Cole Hinchliffe, on his debut, suffered a nasty bang on the head, but carried on, while Green was clattered in first-half injury time, and had to be substituted.
In the third minute of time added on, captain Banbury Ollie Stanbridge gave away a free-kick on the edge of the box.
Although the initial effort was charged down, the ball fell to Kevin Spencer, whose shot took a wicked deflection to wrong-foot Andy keeper – the first goal he has conceded in six games.
Eight minutes into the second-half,Woodley was bro-ught down in the box by Josh Quaynor, and Walker hammerred home the resultant penalty to make it 4-1.
The game went into meltdown for Evesham, who then conceded a fifth Woodley sped clear of the chasing pack, and he side-stepped both the ‘keeper and a defender before slotting the ball into the empty net Unfortunately, he picked up a knock in the process and was substituted immediately, and then the limping Walker was also replaced Four minutes from the end Evesham pulled another goal back.
A loose ball ran to Steve Luckett, who saw his shot take an even bigger deflection than their first goal, to make the final score 5-2, which flattered the home side.
