CHRIS Wilder delivered a brutally honest assessment of Oxford United’s 1-1 draw with Aldershot on Saturday – saying the display was simply not good enough.

The U’s missed out on a great chance to make it three straight League Two wins when their ten-man opponents equalised midway through the second half.

And the worrying thing for United, who can have no excuses, is that it was Aldershot who looked more likely to win the game, and that despite being a man short for 75 minutes after Anthony Straker’s early red card.

James Constable volleyed Wilder’s side ahead after 21 minutes, but they could not assert their superiority on the game and were pegged back, leaving the field to a chorus of boos.

Wilder admitted that his side got what they deserved – if not more.

“I didn’t think we warranted any more than a point with the way we played second half,” he said.

“To be honest I was pretty happy to get a point by the end, that could easily have been a defeat for us.

“We weren’t good enough or clever enough today and that was really disappointing.

“It was a massive opportunity missed and three points would have put us right up in there.”

Going into the game on the back of a derby win over Swindon, it looked odds-on that following Straker’s early bath and Constable’s goal, United would go on and record another win.

“You expect to win the match from there,” Wilder said. “Of course you do.

“But we tried to over-complicate it, played too slowly and weren’t good enough to get the result.

“Fair play to Aldershot because they worked very hard and if I was (their manager) Dean (Holdsworth), I would have been deeply disappointed if I had not got anything out of today.

“I thought for a lot of the second half they were the better team.”
