OXFORD HC, the city’s newest and largest outfit, take their first steps abroad when the juniors compete in the Leiden hockey festival today.

The club have sent 24 youngsters to Oxford’s twin city in Holland, where they will compete in under 14 and under 16 mixed teams.

A merger of the City of Oxford and Rover Oxford clubs, the tourists take on hosts Roomburg, from Leiden, who are celebrating their 75th anniversary, and Leiden’s Polish twin town, Torun.

The tour also marks the 65th anniversary of Oxford and Leiden’s twinning.

Oxford HC will be officially launched next weekend at Oxford Brookes University and Headington School.

The 500-plus member club will field 11 men’s, 7 ladies’ and two mixed adult teams as well as 12 junior sides playing at all levels.

League action starts on September 24 (ladies) and October 1 (men).
