Witney Roadrunners were celebrating after their men's team landed the gold medal in both the Oxfordshire 10 mile county championship and the open category at the Cotswold Classic 10 mile race.

The host club fielded a strong men's team for the event, and excellent packing helped them to easily see off west Oxfordshire rivals Woodstock Harriers for the county crown.

Tony Lock (Vet 40) was the leading Witney athlete home, crossing the line in sixth place in 57mins 33secs.

And with their other points-scoring runners, John Atyeo, Mike Baillie and Rick Parsons, all finishing strongly, they won the county title by a massive 47 points.

Atyeo finished eighth in the open race, clocking 58.51, with Baillie a minute back in ninth.

Parsons's time of 1hr 4mins 2secs brought him 15th place.

The winner of the open race was Belgrave Harrier Simon Jones, who clocked a new course record.

Jones, 22, finished more than three minutes clear in 52.30 - beating the previous mark by 39 seconds.

Steve Male was crowned overall and Vet 40 men's county champion - a title he last won in 2003.

Steve Kimber, running for his first-claim club, Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow, won the senior men's county title, with Atyeo finishing in second and Baillie third.

Lock was runner-up behind Male in the Vet 40 division, while Robin Scho- field (Abingdon Amblers) landed the Vet 50 crown.

In the Vet 60 section, Banbury Harrier Phil Bevis secured the title, although Eynsham Roadrunner Larry Poole, who was not county registered, won the open race.

In the ladies' competition, Kidlington's Sophie Dawson won the overall and senior ladies' titles, crossing the line in 1.06.34.

Banbury's Michelle Buzzard was Vet 35 ladies' champion and Sally Pitts (Witney Roadrunners) secured the Vet 45 title - clocking 1.11.46 - a performance that also saw her land the open race.

Eynsham Roadrunner Kate Williamson won the open and county Vet 55 section, clocking 1.18.28.

The ladies' team title went to Headington Roadrunners, for whom Frances Burge, Sally Howard and Louise Oliver all finished in the top ten.
